Sea, Suspiciously Missing
Tsunami trough recession, multi-wave dynamics, and 30-meter vertical evacuation
// IMMEDIATE ACTIONS
Execute these steps in order:
- 01 RECOGNIZE THE TSUNAMI WARNING & RUN
A rapidly receding shoreline, roaring ocean sound, or ground tremor means a tsunami is imminent. Move immediately without waiting for sirens.
- 02 MOVE TO HIGH GROUND OR INLAND
Head on foot to at least 30 meters (100 ft) elevation or 3 kilometers (2 miles) inland away from rivers and beaches.
- 03 VERTICAL EVACUATION AS LAST RESORT
If unable to reach high terrain, climb to the 4th floor or higher of a reinforced concrete building. Never return after the first wave.
// CRITICAL MISTAKES (DO NOT)
- ✕ Never walk out onto the exposed sea floor to inspect stranded sea life, coral, or shipwrecks.
- ✕ Do not stay to take photos or record videos.
- ✕ Do not seek shelter inside cars, light wooden structures, or beachside bungalowsWHY: tsunamis crush low-rise structures and turn vehicles into lethal floating battering rams
- ✕ Do not return to the shoreline until emergency authorities officially give the all-clear.
“If the sea vanishes exposing the sea floor, run inland and uphill immediately—do not explore the seabed.”
When a subsea megathrust earthquake displaces thousands of cubic kilometers of the ocean floor, the entire overlying water column is violently lifted or dropped.
The Drawdown Phenomenon
If the leading edge of the tsunami wave packet is a trough (drawdown), the ocean surface drops sharply along the coastline. Seawater recedes at rapid speeds, exposing hundreds of meters of normally submerged seabed, reefs, and struggling marine life.
This is not a picturesque low tide; it is the physical displacement trough of a hydrodynamic monster approaching at the speed of a jet airliner. Within five to fifteen minutes, the massive crest arrives as a non-breaking wall of black water packed with debris, crushing everything along the shoreline.
112 reaches fire and emergency medical dispatch directly. 110 is police.
