weather SLUG: hair-suddenly-vertical
Threat Level 5 — Leave Faster

Hair, Suddenly Vertical

Atmospheric electrostatic buildup, imminent lightning streamers, and ground potential safety

// IMMEDIATE ACTIONS

Execute these steps in order:

  1. 01
    LEAVE EXPOSED TERRAIN IMMEDIATELY

Vertical hair indicates you are inside an active electrostatic streamer channel:

    • ├─ Move off ridges, hilltops, open fields, golf courses, and water surfaces immediately.
    • └─ Stay clear of lone trees, flagpoles, metal fences, and tall isolated structures.
  2. 02
    SEEK SUBSTANTIAL ENCLOSED SHELTER

Enter a substantial enclosed building with plumbing/wiring or a hard-topped metal vehicle.

    • ├─ Fully enclosed metal vehicles with windows rolled up act as a safe Faraday cage.
    • └─ Avoid open shelters like gazebos, picnic pavilions, or tents.
  3. 03
EMERGENCY CROUCH (LAST RESORT IF STRANDED)

If caught in open terrain with no shelter reachable in time:

    • ├─ Crouch down low on the balls of your feet with heels pressed firmly together.
    • ├─ Tuck head between knees and cover ears with hands.
    • └─ Minimize contact with soil; touching heels keeps ground current away from your heart.
The crouch is a desperate last-resort mitigation, not a substitute for enclosed shelter.

// CRITICAL MISTAKES (DO NOT)

  • ✕ Do not seek shelter under isolated trees, open gazebos, picnic pavilions, or tent canopies
WHY: isolated tall structures trigger side-flashes
  • ✕ Do not lie flat on the ground
WHY: lying down maximizes the surface area exposed to lethal ground step potential
  • ✕ Do not hold long conductive objects
WHY: golf clubs, metal-tipped umbrellas, fishing rods
  • ✕ Do not assume you are safe just because your hair stopped standing up
WHY: a nearby strike can occur at any moment
MEMORY HOOK (THE ONE THING TO REMEMBER)
“The atmosphere is preparing to strike, not complimenting your volume.”

Humans spend substantial resources persuading their hair to achieve impressive volume. Occasionally, the atmosphere provides this service free of charge.

There will, in fact, be considerable charge.

If your hair starts auditioning for a static-electricity demonstration outdoors during a thunderstorm, your skin begins tingling, or nearby metal objects start buzzing and emitting a faint bluish glow (St. Elmo's fire), the local electrostatic potential gradient has surged past several hundred kilovolts per meter. You are standing directly inside an active upward streamer channel.

The Physics of Pre-Strike Ionization

Prior to a cloud-to-ground lightning discharge, an invisible stepped leader carrying tens of thousands of volts descends from the storm base in discrete 50-meter jumps. In response to this descending electric field, high-voltage positive upward streamers erupt from elevated and conductive objects on the ground—fences, rocks, lone trees, and human heads.

When a downward stepped leader connects with an upward streamer, the circuit closes: a return stroke carrying between 20,000 and 200,000 amperes of current detonates along that ionized plasma channel at one-third the speed of light. Hair stands upright because identical electrostatic charges accumulating along each hair shaft violently repel one another.

Why This Is Not a Photo Opportunity

In multiple documented historical tragedies, hikers and tourists paused to snap photos of their buoyant, floating hair atop scenic mountain ridges, smiling at the novelty moments before a fatal multi-strike discharge decimated the group. Standing hair is an acute, red-line physical warning that the air surrounding you is actively breaking down dielectric resistance.

The Critical Limitation

Hair standing upright is an emergency sign, but it is not a guaranteed early-warning system. The vast majority of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes occur without any noticeable electrostatic warning at ground level. If you hear thunder rumble, the storm is close enough to strike you directly.

EMERGENCY DISPATCH NUMBERS

112 reaches fire and emergency medical dispatch directly. 110 is police.
