Carbon Monoxide, Quietly Ruining Everyone's Afternoon

Incomplete combustion hazards, odorless cellular asphyxiation, and detector protocols

// IMMEDIATE ACTIONS

Execute these steps in order:

  1. 01
    EVACUATE EVERYONE TO OUTDOOR FRESH AIR IMMEDIATELY

    Carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless. Move all occupants and pets into open air immediately.

  2. 02
    CALL 911 / 112 FOR HAZMAT & MEDICAL CREWS

    Report suspected CO poisoning so emergency crews arrive with gas detection and normobaric oxygen equipment.

  3. 03
    KEEP PATIENTS RESTING & ADMINISTER 100% OXYGEN

    Keep victims calm and still; paramedics will deliver 100% high-flow oxygen to displace CO from hemoglobin.

// CRITICAL MISTAKES (DO NOT)

  • ✕ Do not ignore a beeping CO detector
    WHY: never assume it is just a "low battery" glitch without verifying with fresh air
  • ✕ Do not sleep or take a nap to "sleep off" unexplained headache/nausea occurring indoors
    WHY: victims slip into irreversible coma and respiratory arrest in their sleep
  • ✕ Do not run fuel-burning engines, portable generators, charcoal grills, or camping stoves inside a home, garage, or tent—even with doors open.
  • ✕ Do not re-enter the building until firefighters have cleared it with multi-gas atmospheric meters.
MEMORY HOOK (THE ONE THING TO REMEMBER)
“You cannot smell carbon monoxide; if your alarm beeps or multiple people feel flu-like indoors, get outside into fresh air immediately.”

Combustion of organic hydrocarbons requires an adequate stoichiometric supply of oxygen to produce harmless carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and water ($H_2O$). When oxygen is restricted—in a clogged chimney, unserviced gas boiler, indoor generator, charcoal brazier, or indoor grill—incomplete combustion generates carbon monoxide ($CO$).

Biochemical Cellular Asphyxiation

Carbon monoxide is universally known in clinical toxicology as the "silent killer" because it has no odor, no color, no taste, and causes no respiratory irritation.

Once inhaled into the pulmonary alveoli, carbon monoxide diffuses effortlessly across the capillary membrane and binds to the iron heme groups of hemoglobin with an affinity 200 to 250 times greater than oxygen.

This forms carboxyhemoglobin ($COHb$), which not only renders hemoglobin incapable of carrying oxygen to the brain and heart, but also shifts the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve to the left, preventing the remaining oxygen from being released to hypoxic tissues.

The Flu-Like Symptoms Trap

Because carbon monoxide poisoning causes no coughing or eye stinging, early toxicity presents deceptively as a viral illness:

  • Dull frontal tension headache.
  • Dizziness and lightheadedness.
  • Nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.
  • Confusion and memory loss.

If multiple people (or pets) in the same building simultaneously develop "flu-like" symptoms that mysteriously improve when they step outdoors, assume carbon monoxide exposure until proven otherwise.

EMERGENCY DISPATCH NUMBERS

112 reaches fire and emergency medical dispatch directly. 110 is police.
